A New Session of Grace Groups Begins the Week of April 18! Grace Groups are community/Bible study groups that meet weekly at people's homes, at Grace, or via Zoom. Please watch for more information coming soon about the start of the next session of Grace Groups!

SUMMER BIBLE CAMP!!! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! Grace is planning to hold a limited capacity, in-person Summer Bible Camp the week of June 21-25th for children ages 3 through rising-6th-grade. (Rising 7th and 8th graders may register to help this year.) Holding an event of any size, especially during a pandemic, requires a lot of support. A Note from GCA Development Manager Julie Crain regarding the Upcoming VIRTUAL GALA: We have been closely monitoring the pandemic with hopes that we would be able to hold an in-person Gala celebrating the Grace Christian Academy ministry. Given the current CDC guidelines regarding events, a gathering of this size will not be possible this spring. While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to gather as in the past, we see glimpses of the light at the end of this long tunnel. In the meantime, we are planning a virtual event which promises to be something out of the ordinary and will offer a chance for supporters of the school to engage with each other.  Please mark your calendars for the evening of Saturday, May 8th and look for details soon!

Dear Grace Family,

Good afternoon! It's Wednesday of Holy Week....

Wednesday of Holy Week is sometimes called "Silent Wednesday" because the Bible is "silent" about what happened on that day. That day could have been another busy day of teaching and healing for Jesus, or he may have been "hangin' and chillin'" with his dear friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus in Bethany. We don't know because the Bible doesn't tell us. It's "silent" on that.

In the spirit of "Silent Wednesday" of Holy Week, I'm inviting you to observe some "silence" on this Wednesday. Since this email is coming well into the afternoon, perhaps you've already done that--or you've got a plan to later today or tonight. Perhaps this could be setting aside some special quiet time for reading the Bible or prayer. Maybe it could be going on a walk by yourself or with a family member(s) and pondering and discussing some things about Holy Week while you walk (Helpful Hint: Take an umbrella!). Maybe it could be spending some quiet time by yourself at the kitchen table or in your favorite "spot" in your home simply reflecting on God and what God has done for you. These are just some ideas of how you could spend some "silent" time today as you remember the "Silent Wednesday" that Jesus lived for you.

REMINDER: TOMORROW'S NIGHT'S MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE starts at 7:00 p.m. The service will be in-person and live streamed. Holy Communion will be celebrated in the sanctuary.

May God bless you with good health and hope in Jesus---

Dear Grace Family,

Good afternoon! It's Tuesday of Holy Week....

Matthew 21:23-26:2 tells us about Tuesday of the first Holy Week--and the teaching that Jesus offered on that day. Because of the volume of Jesus' teaching that the Bible records for this day, Tuesday of Holy Week is sometimes called "Busy Tuesday." Consider taking some time today or tonight to read the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 21:23-26:2. In order to help apply these words of Jesus to your life, as you read, ask yourself these questions:

1. What is Jesus saying to me here? In other words, what's the "story line" of Jesus' teaching?

2. What, in Jesus' teaching here, convicts me, makes me sad, or gives me a command? Said another way, how is God's Law speaking to me in these words?

3. What, in Jesus' teaching here, tells me about God's love for me? Or about what Jesus has done, is doing, or will do for me? What offers me comfort or gives me joy? Said another way, how is God's Gospel speaking to me in these words?

4. What does Jesus' teaching here lead me to believe?

5. What does Jesus' teaching here lead me to pray about or do?

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up to sponsor flowers on Grace's altar for Easter. If you'd like to do that, please contact Tricia Visscher at (email) churchadmin@gracefallschurch.org; (office phone) 703-534-1719.

May God bless you with good health and hope in Jesus---

Dear Grace Family,

Good afternoon! It's Monday of Holy Week....

Matthew 21:12-13 tells us that on Monday of the first Holy Week, "Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 'It is written,' he said to them, 'My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

Jesus carried out the actions that he did, and said what he said, because what the religious leaders of Judaism at Jesus' time were permitting to happen in the temple, was getting in the way of people's following of God.

On this Monday of Holy Week, let's take a few moments and ponder what Jesus did long ago to help people in their following of God. Let's also consider what Jesus continually calls on you and me to do to help us in our following of God--clear out from our hearts, minds, and lives what may be getting in the way of that. A word that is often used for this in Christianity is repentance. Repentance is about turning away from something (or some things) that are harmful to our relationship with God, and turning to God in faith, seeking forgiveness, renewal, and a way forward.

So what are those things that are getting in the way of your following of God--and mine? Let us take some time today to consider that. However, as we do, and as we come up with something (or some things), let us not despair. Let us not allow guilt or shame to win out. Let us remember why Jesus was in the temple on Monday of the first Holy Week. He was there because he was on a journey. Jesus was on the journey to the cross on Good Friday. There, at the cross, Jesus paid for each and every one of our sins to make us right with God (justify us). Romans 8:1 tells us that "there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." On account of God's grace to you and to me, and his gift of faith in Jesus to us, the beautiful words of that verse apply to you and me.

On this Monday of Holy Week, as we ponder clearing from our hearts, minds, and lives that thing (or those things) that is (are) in the way of our following of God, I leave you with these words from Psalm 51, "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence    or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me" (10-12).

Also on this Monday of Holy Week, if you have been meaning to contact Tricia Visscher to sponsor flowers on Grace's altar at Easter, but haven't yet done so, you have until this Wednesday (March 31) to do that. Tricia's contract information is (email) churchadmin@gracefallschurch.org; (office phone) 703-534-1719.

May God continue to bless you with good health and hope in Jesus---

The "40 Days of Giving" Non-perishable Food & Clothing Drive Is Going Very Well! Coordinators Bill & Jennifer Hatzfeld report that the Lenten non-perishable food and clothing drive has been going very well! Substantial amounts of non-perishable food items and clothes have been collected and taken to donation locations. Some items have even been shared directly with those in need! Additionally, the drive has received volunteer support from Grace adult members and children--as well as a friend of one of the young people! (Nathaniel, thanks for bringing your buddy Ethan to help with collections!) Many flyers have been given to donors inviting them to return to Grace for Easter...and the gospel was shared with someone who didn't know much about Jesus--but does now!

Thanks to all who have donated to the food and clothing drive, as well as volunteered! And thanks to God for his tremendous blessings on this event! The non-perishable food drive and clothing drive will continue for one more week and conclude on Easter. If you have more non-perishable food or gently used/new clothing to contribute, please bring them!

Community Support during the Lenten Season: During this year’s Lenten season, Grace is collecting clothes and food to help those in our community in need.  Lent is a season in which many believers sacrifice or fast as a way to prepare for the Resurrection event. God’s Word through Isaiah 58:6-7 reminds us that caring for those in need is a kind of fasting God values. During Lent,  Grace is collecting new or gently used clothes and non-perishable food items which will be donated to a local non-profit clothing store and the Food for Others food bank. There are two large boxes at Grace where you can place your donations. Items will be collected on Mondays and Thursdays. We thank you for your contributions as we seek to live out Christ in our community. If you have any questions, please contact Bill and Jennifer Hatzfeld at hatzfeld@hotmail.com or 410-861-7554.

An Opportunity to Support Christians Forward--Southeast Asia - Christians Forward--Southeast Asia (CFSA; https://www.christiansforward.org/) is a global mission organization with which Grace has had a relationship for years. You may recall the founder and president of CFSA, Anne Press, having offered mission presentations at Grace. Or, you may be one of the Grace members who have served with CFSA on a mission trip. Or, you may have supported the work of CFSA through a financial gift.

This month, CFSA is offering a special opportunity to help support the outreach work they do. If you are moved to support the work of CFSA, you may make a gift directly to CFSA here, or you may write a check to Grace (please write "For CFSA" on the memo line) and Grace will forward all gifts received to CFSA. If you are making a financial gift to CFSA at Grace, you may place your gift in the blue box in the Fellowship Room marked "Christians Forward--Southeast Asia." Thank you for considering financially supporting this worthy cause!

If you've seen/heard the forecast for snow/sleet for tomorrow and are wondering if Grace will still hold in-person worship--yes, Grace will still hold in-person worship. In the history of Grace (since 1963), the congregation has only called off public worship on one occasion on account of snow/ice. While tomorrow's forecast does call for inclement weather, its impact won't warrant cancellation #2.
Grace will also live stream tomorrow's worship at 9:30 a.m. (English Traditional), 11:15 a.m. (English Contemporary) and 12:30 p.m. (Spanish). You can find the English live streams at gracefallschurch.org/stream. The Spanish live stream can be found here.

Grace's staff and called workers have begun to receive vaccinations for COVID-19. The Fairfax County Health Department has included vaccinations to staff and teachers of private schools along with vaccinations to staff and teachers of public schools within the county. Therefore Grace's staff and called workers have begun to receive vaccinations. Our prayer is that this is the beginning of the end of the pandemic! And we thank God for the vaccine...those who developed and produce it...and those who administer it!

December 12, 2020

Grace Family,

Good evening! I pray this message finds all of you well!

At a press conference yesterday, Virginia's Governor announced that COVID-19's infection rate among Virginians, as well as hospitalizations on account of the virus, have risen significantly in recent weeks. On account of those and other trends related to COVID-19, Governor Northam announced new steps that Virginia is taking to combat the spread of the virus. Although the Governor's updated response to the virus does not greatly impact how Grace's ministries currently deal with COVID-19, it does present us, as a congregation, an opportune time to review Grace's current practices related to COVID-19. Those practices follow. By all of us together adhering to these practices, we can do our part, together as a Christian congregation, to limit the spread of the virus and serve those around us as loving and responsible neighbors in the Northern Virginia community.
  • All worshipers are required to enter Grace’s facility through the parking lot glass doors.
  • All worshipers age 5 and above are required to wear masks in Grace’s facility. This is in accordance with Governor Northam’s requirement for mask-wearing in public buildings, such as houses of worship.
  • Hand sanitizing stations are available at the entrance to the building and the sanctuary, as well as at other locations throughout the facility.
  • Upon entering Grace, worshipers should go directly to the sanctuary and be seated.
  • Those entering the sanctuary first will be directed to sit at the front of the sanctuary. The sanctuary will be filled from the front to the back. Worshipers will also be directed to sit in the pews according to social distance guidelines (singles: 6 feet apart from each other; families may sit together in the same pew). Only every-other-pew will be available for seating (for social distancing reasons).
  • If the sanctuary reaches Phase 1 seating capacity, the Fellowship Room will be used for overflow seating (with appropriate social distancing). Audio/video of the live service will be available on the large screen in the Fellowship Room.
  • There will be no worship folders, pens, or Connect Cards available for use during the services. All necessary worship information will be displayed on the screens. Hymnals, songbooks, and Bibles have been removed from the pews.
  • Collection plates will not be passed. Those wishing to offer a financial gift at worship will be able to do so by using the collection plates positioned at the entrance to the sanctuary.
  • The services will be shorter than the “usual” in-person services at Grace. This is to allow enough time for the sanctuary to be disinfected between each service.
  • The sanctuary will be disinfected by Grace’s contracted cleaning company between each service. While the services are being conducted, this company will clean all high touch areas and restrooms throughout the rest of the building. The entire GCA hallway will be blocked off on Sundays. The water fountains will also be blocked from use.
  • There will be no snacks or refreshments served. Sunday School and Bible studies will not meet in-person. There will be no Choir rehearsal. There will be no gathering allowed in the Fellowship Room. For those who wish to talk with others after worship, the parking lot is available for this—with appropriate social distancing being practiced.
  • At the conclusion of each service, worshipers will leave the sanctuary from back-to-front, in order to observe appropriate social distancing.
  • Those who are feeling ill, the elderly, and otherwise at-risk individuals are encouraged to continue worshiping via Grace's live streams.
Tomorrow, Grace will offer in-person worship at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 12:30 p.m. For the specifics of in-person worship at Grace during Phase 3 of Virginia's Reopening, please click here.
Holy Communion will be celebrated at Monday Evening Worship (7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 14).

Grace will also live stream tomorrow's worship at 9:30 a.m. (English Traditional) and 11:15 a.m. (English Contemporary). You can find the English live streams at gracefallschurch.org/stream. The Spanish live stream can be found here.

You're invited to participate in a virtual Bible study on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. via Zoom. The Bible study is taking a look at the New Testament Book of Second Corinthians. Andy Miller is leading the study. You can reach him here for Zoom login information, or to ask any questions that you may have about the study.

A Midweek Advent service is scheduled for this Wednesday, December 16 at 7:00 p.m. Grace will offer this service in-person and via live-streaming.

Levi Schriefer, to whom Grace extended a Letter of Intent* to serve as principal of Grace Christian Academy at last Sunday's Call Meeting, has declined Grace's Letter of Intent. A GCA Principal Call Meeting has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, January 6, 2021, to follow the already scheduled Voters Meeting on that evening.

*Because Levi Schriefer has not yet graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College, but is scheduled to in January 2021, procedural requirements necessitated Grace extending Levi a Letter of Intent rather than a Divine Call. If Levi would have accepted Grace's Letter of Intent, a Divine Call would have been extended to him after his graduation.

As was announced at last Sunday's Congregational Meeting, a Christmas Services Survey was emailed to everyone on Grace's email list earlier today. If you did not receive this survey, please check your Spam or Promotions folders for that email (Surveys such as this sometimes end up in those places.). Alternatively, you can access the survey here.

Please feel free to make use of Grace's pastoral care (private Communion, counseling, etc.). Pastor Satorius and I are more than willing to help you however we may be able to. Additionally, we have other volunteers who have stepped forward to offer a variety of kinds of assistance. Please don't hesitate to reach out!

Thank you for your continuing financial contributions to support Grace's ministries! If you would like to make a financial gift to Grace, you can do so by going to Grace's website gracefallschurch.org/giving. Or you can mail your gift to Grace at 3233 Annandale Road, Falls Church, Virginia, 22042.

Finally, a bunk bed is available for give-away. You can view one bed of the bunk bed set here. If you have questions about the bunk bed, or would like to acquire it, please contact Pastor Satorius.

Thank you for taking the time to read this UPDATE!

May God continue to bless you with good health and hope in Jesus---

Finally, I ask for your prayers for Jeremiah Schmiege and his family as they deliberate the Call that Grace extended to Jeremiah last Sunday to serve as principal of Grace Christian Academy. Regarding that, Jeremiah asked me to share the following message with you:

Dear Saints at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and Grace Christian Academy,

Thank you for extending a Call to me to be your principal. I am excited to learn more about the work that this Call entails. It is a joy to see and hear how the Spirit is at work through the hearts, hands, and voices of Christians in a different corner of our planet.

As I consider the opportunity before me, please add me to your prayers. Pray also for Gretchen, for Geneva, Cy, and August (my wife and three kids). Pray for the Saints at Sola Fide Lutheran Church and Sola Fide Academy. Finally, join me in expressing confidence in Christ. In a year when it seems like east is west and up is down; when you've had to bid farewell to a beloved principal and are waiting for the dust to settle, know that God's Kingdom will advance in the way he ordains. Our salvation and eternity are secure in Christ alone.
In Christ,
Jeremiah Schmiege
